With penetrating wounds to the globe, the retina cannot be visualized, and only visual electrodiagnostic tests can satisfactorily assess function. The flash ERG and flash VEP, used together, are better at predicting your patient’s outcome than either subjective assessment or ultrasonography. The flash VEP is also a superior technique for predicting the visual outcome after vitreous hemorrhage.
For evaluation of the visual function of patients with dense cataracts, combined information from the flash VEP and the Potential Acuity Meter (PAM) provide the best predictive information on post-surgical visual acuity.
